Natenadze’s Wine Cellar

REGION

Meskheti

STORY

Natenadze’s Wine Cellar has been proudly restoring the tradition of winemaking in its Meskheti region, where centuries ago the Ottomans destroyed valuable local grape species.

Giorgio Natenadze has been carefully studying and reviving as many as 40 local grape species, making rare wines naturally over a 3-hectare territory. Natenadze’s Wine Cellar uses organic processes, dry-farming all grapes manually with no irrigation used.

LOCATION

Village Akhaltsikhe, Akhaltsikhe Municipality, Region Samstkhe-Javakheti, Georgia

LAND

Located in the Meskheti Region in the Village Askhaltsikhe, Natenadze’s Wine Cellar’s vineyards sit as high as 1650 meters above sea level, where his wines are farmed wild from this volcanic mountainous region. Historians and scientists believe the Meskheti Region may be the birthplace for wine as one of the oldest dated winemaking regions in Georgia.
